Just because you have the right of way, doesn't mean you should cross right away...
In fact, when I'm in my car attempting to make a right turn and you're waiting impatiently to cross the road, tapping the button again and again, I still have the right of way and you have to wait. In this situation, I not only have to make sure that I carefully merge into oncoming traffic, but now I also have watch out for your over-eager appendages and make absolutely sure that the little white "walk now" man doesn't suddenly appear because you're so anxious to continue on to wherever those hoofs are taking you that you hang your toes so far over the curb corner you might actually feel my side view mirror tickle your rib cage!
Can you take a couple steps back away from the street? I know, I know...."Pedestrian Rights"...but use your head. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. This has happened so many times it's mind-boggling. As I glance back in my rear view, I almost always see a disgusted look and shaking of the head. Yes, Sir. You bravely proved your point by standing as close as you fucking could to the street and as soon as you were able, you almost walked head first into oncoming traffic. Bravo...but next time step BACK. We'd all appreciate a little "right on red" room...Thanks.

PS - When I'm already standing at the corner (in pedestrian mode now) waiting to cross the street, and someone walks up next to me and hits the crosswalk button again, it's borderline insulting. That means, they think that I'm just standing at the intersection hoping the light turns from green to red and that the walk signal will just magically appear. Trust me, I hit the button already and just so you know....once will suffice.
(a rather stylish crosswalk)
( a habit forming crosswalk)
(insect crossing)
(crossing the Delaware....They're in...Delaware...)
some days i consider blogging about intersection experiences i have while running.
ReplyDeletefor instance, why do i thank people for not running me over when i have the right of way? or, why do drivers act like they are doing me a favor for letting me go when i have the right of way? ya know, waving me on like "it's cool. go ahead."
